Transformed Residence Hall Re-opens to GW Students

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

First-year students at The George Washington University have settled into the newly renovated Lafayette Hall, located at 2100 Eye Street NW on the University’s Foggy Bottom Campus.    Designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, the renovation has transformed the 1920’s-vintage structure into a 21st Century residence hall by fully reconfiguring each floor of the eight-story building to accommodate new a new elevator and stairs, plus five unique suite layouts.  The LEED Silver design revitalizes Lafayette Hall’s historic character through a restored main entrance and gracious lobby, as well as replacement of all windows.

BGA’s Project Manager, Leslie W. Louden, AIA, LEEP AP, noted that “the main design challenge of this project was working within a small footprint to achieve the University’s goals for students’ quality of life and to achieve the optimum bed count in coordination with existing structure and window locations.”

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Planning for a new Sport and Wellness Center at George School moved forward with the approval of concept design plans at the end of August. Designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, the 100,000 sf facility will include a new 25-yard, 8-lane competitive swimming pool, a performance gym with two courts, a practice gym with suspended track, a fitness center and locker rooms, and support facilities.

The new Center will be directly across the street from the LEED Gold Certified Mollie Dodd Anderson Library, also designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, and near the Quaker Meeting House, a focal point on the School’s 240-acre campus.

Project Manager, Stuart Billings, AIA, LEED AP, noted, “the Center will be designed to achieve the equivalent of LEED Silver Certification, in keeping with George School’s commitment to sustainable design.”

George School (www.georgeschool.org) is a boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12, located near Newtown, Pennsylvania.
