UVA Bookstore Expansion Receives LEED Silver Certification

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Paul Lund, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Principal and Project Manager with Bowie Gridley Architects,  announced that the UVA Bookstore Expansion, designed by BGA, was recognized with Silver Level LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.  Sustainable Design Consulting Group of Richmond, VA worked with BGA to guide the development of sustainable design concepts for the 17,000 gsf facility.  BGA’s design creates a unified composition with the existing masonry clad-garage façade and with the adjacent Memorial Gymnasium, while giving a stronger presence to the building along this primary entry into the campus. The expansion increases the size of the facility without increasing its footprint and creating a strong connection with its community. Added value was achieved by locating the addition at the same level as the existing main retail floor, requiring minor modifications of the existing bookstore layout, and, thereby, allowing ongoing operations throughout construction. The BGA team was responsible for feasibility planning as well as full design services for the project, which opened for the Fall semester of 2011.
