Bowie Gridley Architects worked with Montgomery College on the site selection and design of this new child care center for the Germantown Campus. Based on a prototype designed by Bowie Gridley Architects for multiple campuses of Montgomery College, the new facility provides a safe, secure and age-appropriate environment that stimulates development. The child care center contains public spaces and controlled children’s zones. Support functions such as the director’s office, conference room and kitchen are located near the entrance for easy access by parents and visitors. Two preschool classrooms, each with a private toilet room, share a covered porch and access to the outdoor playground.

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013Renovations and additions to the former Harrison Elementary School provide over 63,000 sf of space for Pre-K through 8th grade students of the Meridian Public Charter School.
- Improvements to the existing building include modernized classrooms, office spaces, stairs, and circulation space for students while a 3-story 14,000-sf addition adds large assembly spaces.
- The addition is placed in the void between the existing classroom wings. The use of glass, metal and wood complement the existing masonry structure.
- Building entries on 13th and V Streets have been restored to their original character.
- New energy-efficient windows, designed to restore the original look of the building, along with new HVAC systems, contribute to the project’s achieving LEED certification.

Dolley Madison Library Awarded AIA Northern Virginia Design Award
Monday, June 10th, 2013Bowie Gridley Architects’ recent renovation and expansion of Dolley Madison Library in McLean, VA was recognized with a Jurors’ Special Citation by The Northern Virginia Chapter of The American Institute of Architects on Thursday, June 6. The award program recognizes outstanding architecture in the Northern Virginia area. The Juror’s Special Citation is awarded to projects that bear an exceptional aspect or detail that the jury feels represents excellence which deserves specific honor.
The building, completed in May 2011, was honored for its curving floor-to-ceiling glass wall composed of a staggered pattern of vertical and horizontal mullions with wood fins and louvers. The wall is designed to evoke the park’s trees and leafy canopy. The reading room floor level is raised above the adjacent forest floor, creating the impression of being in a tree house within the forest. The project was also awarded Gold Level LEED Certification by the USGBC for its sustainable design features, including a green roof, efficient and renewable energy systems and an environmental education program.
