The restoration and modernization of Meridian Public Charter School, designed by Bowie Gridley Architects (BGA), has been recognized by David Maloney, the State Historic Preservation Officer for the District of Columbia, with an Award of Excellence in Historic Preservation.
The award was received at a formal honor ceremony hosted by the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office, in collaboration with the DC Preservation League, held May 15th. The award recognizes the restoration of the former the DC Harrison School, located within the U Street Historic District of Washington, DC. BGA renovated classrooms and administrative areas, replaced windows and other features to maintain the overall architectural character of the historic building, while adding a three-story component to accommodate large assembly spaces necessary for a contemporary school.
The LEED™ Certified project demonstrates how a historic school building can be respectfully updated for current academic needs through the integration of a contemporary addition that is sympathetic to the original building features.\
