The University of Virginia Bookstore Expansion project, designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, was occupied and functioning as students arrived on campus in September. The addition is located above an existing 3-story parking garage along Emmet Street. BGA’s design provides 16,500 square feet of additional space for the bookstore, including enlarged clothing, computer and technical support departments, food service, new staff offices and storage.
Located at the same level as an existing main retail floor, the addition did not require substantial modification of the existing Bookstore layout, allowing it to remain open throughout construction with minimal disruption. A key design challenge for the architectural team, led by BGA’s Principal and Project Manager, Paul Lund, AIA, LEED AP, was to successfully design the addition so that it formed a unified composition with the existing masonry-clad garage: “The design creates a unified façade with the adjacent Memorial Gymnasium, giving a stronger presence to the building along Emmet Street – a primary entry into the historic campus.”
By expanding the building without increasing its footprint and creating a strong connection with its community, the project is on track to earn LEED Silver Certification.
