Georgetown University Athletic Center

Bowie Gridley Architects/Populous was selected to design this new Intercollegiate Athletic Center facility for Georgetown University’s men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and lacrosse programs (NCAA Division I, Big East Conference).

The 136,000 square-foot, three-story facility provides state-of-the-art training facilities for the University’s signature athletic programs, as well as social and academic support centers for all of the school’s scholar-athletes. The new facility, which is directly connected to the McDonough Gym via a linear glass link, was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.  A variety of student spaces make the Intercollegiate Athletic Center a place for gathering. Offices and meeting space, seminar rooms, study areas, and student-athlete lounge areas comprise a portion of the building. The Center was designed and constructed to fit within the context of the campus with a Collegiate Gothic style.

Montgomery College Child Care Center

Bowie Gridley Architects worked with Montgomery College on the site selection and design of this new child care center for the Germantown Campus.  Based on a prototype designed by Bowie Gridley Architects for multiple campuses of Montgomery College, the new facility provides a safe, secure and age-appropriate environment that stimulates development.  The child care center contains public spaces and controlled children’s zones. Support functions such as the director’s office, conference room and kitchen are located near the entrance for easy access by parents and visitors.  Two preschool classrooms, each with a private toilet room, share a covered porch and access to the outdoor playground.

UVA Bookstore Expansion

Bowie Gridley Architects’ expanded The University of Virginia’s Bookstore, located along a prominent entry point into the historic UVA campus above an existing 3-story parking garage.

  • The expansion provided enlarged clothing, computer and technical support departments for the bookstore, as well as additional space for food service, new staff offices and storage
  • Established a unified composition with the existing masonry clad-garage façade and the adjacent Memorial Gymnasium, while giving a stronger presence to the building
  • The BGA Team was responsible for feasibility planning as well as full design services for the project, which opened on time for the Fall semester of 2011
  • The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.

UVA McLeod Hall Renovation

Following construction of the University’s new Nursing Education Building, Bowie Gridley Architects began an extensive planning study and design of a phased full renovation of McLeod Hall, the home of UVA’s School of Nursing since 1972.

  • BGA designed renovations including the expansion of the Clinical Simulation Learning Center as well as a new lobby, cafe and classrooms
  • The Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry has greater visibility and expanded capacity for researchers on the first floor of the building
  • Renovations are being completed under a phased implementation plan to ensure minimal disruption of ongoing operations
  • The most recent phase of the project is LEED Silver certified

University of Mary Washington

This award-winning, LEED Gold addition and renovation to the Mason and Randolph Halls transforms two traditional buildings into a 108,000 sf living-learning center shared by residents and the larger UMW campus community. Residence and faculty spaces are interspersed with lounge and study venues, bringing a fresh new look to prominent collaboration and relaxation spaces.

Johns Hopkins University

Bowie Gridley Architects has provided planning and design services to JHU on an ongoing basis for more than 10 years. The Dupont Circle campus in Washington, DC encompasses the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Carey Business School, and the Krieger School of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP).

  • Projects have been implemented in phases and have included modernization of three buildings to provide academic, administrative, conference and support spaces.
  • A collaborative study and student support space for use by students from all three schools was recently completed. Flexible furniture and extensive technology features have made the space very popular with students and faculty.
  • At SAIS, a state-of-the-art Distance Learning Center provides the capability of remote instruction throughout the US and abroad.
  • Additional renovations have provided new technology-rich learning, conference, and collaboration spaces for the Carey Business School.

Georgetown University Library

The master plan and concept design services provided by Bowie Gridley Architects in association with Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood, recommend the renovation of the existing 201,600 sf library and addition of 155,500 sf featuring a student center, a café, computer center and special exhibits. The design opens the facility to natural daylight with views to the Potomac River, while signalling arrival to the main campus

 

UVA Nursing Education Building

Sited directly across the street from the main building, McLeod Hall, this 34,000 sf Education Building ushers in a new era for UVA’s School of Nursing. It creates collaborative workspaces and new community spaces while highlighting health and wellness by its four-story open grand stairs. Sustainable design principles include a partial green roof, low VOC material selection, operable windows, and sun shades/shelves contributing greatly to the building’s energy efficiency.

 

American University SOC

A modern façade juxtaposed with a neo-classical design conveys a high-tech image for the School of Communication and opens the University’s historic McKinley Building to the main campus. State-of-the-art newsroom, classrooms, offices and support spaces prepare students for work in journalism, broadcast, or film. A central atrium adds spaces for lectures and events. The project meets rigorous standards of sustainability and was certified LEED Gold.

Amherst College

Upon completion of a feasibility study, BGA designed a major renovation and expansion of Amherst College’s Pratt Field and Neuhoff-Lumley Track, the third-oldest NCAA football playing site in the nation. The design celebrates the rich history and tradition of the college: traditional Georgian brick, distinctive steeple elements and careful siting of buildings and landscaping to minimize the project’s visual impact on neighboring residences. Construction was completed in September 2013.

  • The new 2,500-seat stadium was re-oriented to better fit the overall campus layout and features a synthetic turf field; competition running track; larger, multi-level press box; spectator amenities and concessions
  • The expansion also includes a new 15,000 square-foot Field House with locker rooms, restrooms, training room and meeting facilities for the College’s Division III (NESCAC Conference) football team and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, as well as visiting teams
