Lehrman, LLC Sets Opening of DC Office

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Lehrman, LLC, a privately held New York-based real estate firm, has set a February 2013 opening for its new DC office in Friendship Heights. The new office is the result of collaboration between the firm’s founder, Susan Lehrman, and Bowie Gridley Architects’ team. The design provides space for five staff, as well as a conference room and support space. With an emphasis on philanthropic efforts, the office serves as both a professional, contemporary business place and a comfortable, welcoming venue for receiving guests.

BGA’s team capitalized on the openness of the floor plan, using glass partitions and individual control of the interior through dimmable lighting and temperature control features. Additionally, BGA was responsible for the office move, as well as all IT, telecommunications, furniture and finishes for the project.

University of Mary Washington Living/Learning Center to be Featured in 2013 SCUP Mid-Atlantic Presentation

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

“Why Live on Campus in the Internet Age?”—a presentation exploring how learning experiences can be more fully integrated with residence life—has been accepted by the Society for College and University Planning for its 2013 Mid-Atlantic regional conference. The conference, entitled “Academic Relevance—Is Higher Education Still the Gateway for Opportunity in America?” will be held April 7-9, 2013 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The presentation features the transformation of two residence halls at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, VA into a 21st Century learning venue through renovations and additions designed by Bowie Gridley Architects. BGA Project Manager Leslie W. Louden, AIA, LEED AP, Associate; and Christine Porter, UMW’s Director of Residence Life, will discuss how UMW and BGA collaborated to establish new operational precedents for integrating academic and residential experiences and promoting students’ awareness of the impact of individual behavior on the environment.

“The project is UMW’s first to include an energy dashboard that students can access through the campus network, with live data on residents’ resource consumption as well as instances of sustainability manifested through the design. It complements ongoing programs emphasizing the UMW community’s power to influence positive change through the way they live and learn, and will serve as a prototype for future projects throughout the campus,” said Louden.

More detail on the presentation, as well as the full schedule for the conference, at this link.

St. Anne’s-Belfield School

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Lower/Middle School is designed to accommodate a co-ed student enrollment of 540 in grades Pre-K through 8.

  • The building supports a realignment in the school’s structure: the Middle School (5-8) was moved from the Upper School (9-12) and joined with the Lower School (Pre-K-4)
  • The concept allowed for the construction of the new building without impact to the existing aging Lower School structure, which has been demolished to make way for a new play field
  • The 104,000 square-foot building has been broken down into distinct, traditionally styled, gable-roofed sections to create a smaller scale “village” design and to give visible identity to the various functional anchors
  • The facility features the full complement of academic and administrative spaces, as well as a library, dining hall, and 425-seat theater.

BGA Completes State of the Art Clinical Simulation Learning Center at UVA’s School of Nursing

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Bowie Gridley Architects is proud to announce the completion of the final phase of University of Virginia’s Clinical Simulation Learning Center in McLeod Hall, originally built in 1972 as the home of the UVA School of Nursing. The renovated 10,000 square foot Simulation Center Project now boasts several state-of-the-art ICU, geriatric, pediatric, and obstetric simulators; two clinical skill labs; head walls with full instruments; a front desk reception area that also simulates a ward waiting room; and hi-definition television screens and cameras linked to two separate viewing rooms to observe students for skills training. The “Sim Lab” is the third phase of a multi-phased renovation project designed by Bowie Gridley Architects.

The center, set to open this spring, will be used to train both nursing and pre-med and medical students year-round. The building marks an important step in UVA’s training for their nursing and medical school programs. The project was also designed to LEED Silver standards and is awaiting certification. Reba Moyer Childress, Assistant Professor for the School of Nursing, stated “Through the Clinical Simulation Learning Center’s innovative and interactive learning activities, graduates are prepared to effectively function as current providers and future leaders in inter-professional teams, high acuity health care environments, and complex systems.”

Dolley Madison Library Awarded Tree Preservation Award

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Bowie Gridley Architects’ recent renovation and expansion of Dolley Madison Library in McLean, VA was recently recognized with a Tree Preservation Award by the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. The award program recognizes those who have done an outstanding job of preserving trees by designing projects to preserve the maximum number and the most suitable trees possible.

The building, completed in May 2011, features a curving floor-to-ceiling glass wall composed of a staggered pattern of vertical and horizontal mullions with wood fins and louvers. The wall is designed to evoke the park’s trees and leafy canopy. The reading room floor level is raised above the adjacent forest floor, creating the impression of being in a tree house within the forest. The project was also awarded Gold Level LEED Certification by the USGBC for its sustainable design features, including a green roof, efficient and renewable energy systems and an environmental education program.

Montgomery College Opens Germantown Campus Childcare Facility

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Montgomery College’s Germantown Campus has opened a new childcare facility, designed by Bowie Gridley Architects. The 4,200 sf space provides a fun and playful space that is full of color and an interactive environment. Security and controlled access are important elements in the design.  The new facility provides for safety, security, and age appropriate environments that stimulate development. The child care center contains public spaces and controlled zones. Support functions such as the director’s office, conference room and kitchen are located near the entrance for easy access by parents and visitors. Two preschool classrooms, each with a private toilet room, share a covered porch and access to the outdoor playground.

The design is based off a prototype designed by BGA for multiple campuses of Montgomery College. BGA’s planning of the Germantown Campus site allows for three such facilities.
