The Meridian Public Charter School Project, designed by Bowie Gridley Architects (BGA), has been recognized with a Design Excellence Merit Award in the Historic Resources Category from the Washington Chapter AIA. The Award, which was presented at the Annual Chapter Design Awards event in October, recognizes the restoration of the former the DC Harrison School, located within the U Street Historic District of Washington, DC. BGA renovated classrooms and administrative areas, replaced windows and other features to maintain the overall architectural character of the historic building, while adding a three-story component to accommodate large assembly spaces necessary for a contemporary school. The LEED™ Silver certified project demonstrates how a historic school building can be respectfully updated for current academic needs through the integration of a contemporary addition that is sympathetic to the original building features.
