Bowie Gridley Architects took part in a presentation of DC student work on December 8th at Howard University. The event, which was sponsored by the Washington Architectural Foundation, was the culmination of several weeks of study for DC Public School students who explored buildings in their community with the assistance of professionals from BGA.
Both architectural and administrative staff contributed their time and talent to assist DC public school teachers enrich the learning experience of students through Architecture in Schools, a program sponsored by the Washington Architectural Foundation. Coordinated by BGA staff professionals Sebastian von Marschall and Brian Walbridge, volunteers worked with 34 students from Stuart Hobson Middle School and 20 Kindergarten Students from Peabody Elementary as they explored museums, schools, fire stations, houses, libraries and government buildings in their communities.
Bowie Gridley Architects has participated in the Architecture in Schools Program since 2007, working with students from Savoy Elementary, Harriett Tubman Elementary, Burville Elementary, Brightwood Elementary, and Oyster Adams Elementary.
Architecture in the Schools (AIS) matches volunteer architects with public school teachers to enrich the learning experience of children. AIS teaches children how to exercise their analytical and creative skills through the architectural design process and a heightened civic consciousness, bridging the gap between what is learned in school and everyday life. AIS has reached more than 8,000 children in metropolitan Washington DC schools all wards of the District since it began in 1992 16 years ago.
The Washington Architectural Foundation, which is affiliated with the AIA Washington DC Chapter, is made up of architects and public sector members who represent the local building and development industry, local housing and social service non-profits and arts organizations.
